The Way of the Cross in the Time of Quarantine

The leader will start with the sign of the cross.

In the name of the Father, (+) and of the Son,

and of the Holy Spirit.

The people answer:

Amen.

The leader will now pray the Opening Prayer:

Heavenly Father,

you send us your only begotten Son

to reconcile us to yourself.

He offered himself on the cross,

so that on the cross he may lead us all back to you.

Send us your Spirit

to accompany us on this way of the cross.

May this way lead us to a worthy thanksgiving

for the sacrifice of your Son.

May this way fill us with strength

that will enable us to remain steadfast

in the face of this present crisis.

In this time of quarantine,

we continue to hold on to the cross.

May the cross be our light

that shows the way to remaining united.

May the cross be our confidence

that dispels all fear and anxiety.

May the cross be our hope

that helps us remain faithful until the end. Amen.

The leader will now say:

THE FIRST STATION: THE LAST SUPPER

We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you.

The people answer:

Because by your holy cross

you have redeemed the world.

The leader will now say:

A Reading from the First Letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians.

For I received from the Lord what also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus, on the night he was handed over, took bread, and, after he had given thanks, broke it and said, “This is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”

In the same way also the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.”

The Word of the Lord.

The people answer:

Thanks be to God.

The leader will now say:

During the Last Supper, the apostles gathered around Jesus at the upper room. We are still limited to gather together physically as a community, but it is not impossible to unite our hearts spiritually in the Lord. In this time of quarantine, we feel the great need of being a church, of being a community.

The leader will now say:

We pray to the Lord, to help us to remain united spiritually. Help us to be united in prayer and in doing service to those who are in need. Amen.

The leader will now pray the following prayers:

Our Father, Who art in heaven,

Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy Kingdom come.

Thy Will be done on earth as it is in Heaven.

The people answer:

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Leader:

Hail, Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou amongst women
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

The people answer:

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners,
now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Because by your holy cross

you have redeemed the world.

The leader will now say:

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke.

Then going out he went, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him. When he arrived at the place, he said to them, “Pray that you may not undergo the test.” After withdrawing about a stone’s throw from them and kneeling, he prayed, saying, “Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from me; still, not my will but yours be done.” And to strengthen him an angel from heaven appeared to him. He was in such agony and he prayed so fervently that his sweat became like drops of blood falling on the ground.

The Gospel of the Lord.

The people answer:

Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ.

The leader will now say:

So great was the agony of Jesus that his sweat fell to the ground like drops of blood.

Today, many too are in great agony for the uncertainty that face them. Many are without jobs. Many lost their income. Many are homeless. Many are hungry and afraid.

The leader will now say:

We pray to the Lord, to fill our hearts with love and dispel all forms of anxiety. Bring help and consolation to those who had to carry extra burden in this time of quarantine. Amen.

The leader will now pray the following prayers:

Our Father, Who art in heaven,

Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy Kingdom come.

Thy Will be done on earth as it is in Heaven.

The people answer:

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil. Amen.

We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you.

The people answer:

Because by your holy cross

you have redeemed the world.

The leader will now say:

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark.

The high priest rose before the assembly and questioned Jesus, saying, “Have you no answer? What are these men testifying against you?” But he was silent and answered nothing. Again, the high priest asked him and said to him, “Are you the Messiah, the son of the Blessed One?” Then Jesus answered, “I am; and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of the Power and coming with the clouds of heaven.” At that the high priest tore his garments and said, “What further need have we of witnesses? You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?” They all condemned him as deserving to die.

The Gospel of the Lord.

The people answer:

Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ.

The leader will now say:

Jesus did not deserve to be punished by death. He was accused unjustly. But in his death is our life.

Many have died because of COVID-19. Even health care workers succumbed to this disease.

Nobody deserves to die this way. But we entrust all of them to the mercy of the Father. We pray for the repose of their souls. We pray for their loved ones.

The leader will now say:

We pray to the Lord, to grant eternal rest unto those who have died, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Amen.

you have redeemed the world.

The leader will now say:

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew.

Pilate said to them, “Then what shall I do with Jesus called Messiah?” They all said, “Let him be crucified!” But he said, “Why? What evil has he done?” They only shouted louder, “Let him be crucified!” They stripped off his clothes and threw a scarlet military cloak about him.

Weaving a crown out of thorns they placed it on his head, and a reed in his right hand.

The Gospel of the Lord.

The people answer:

Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ.

The leader will now say:

Jesus’s offering of himself to the Father is total. He embraced its painful cost.

Many continue to offer their lives to make this quarantine work – the police, the military, the barangay workers, the security, utility, and food personnel. Oftentimes, they face hardship and difficulties in fulfilling their duties.

The leader will now say:

We pray to the Lord, to bless all those who have to go to work despite the present danger. Protect them from all harm and keep them away from sickness. Amen.

The leader will now pray the following prayers:

Our Father, Who art in heaven,

Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy Kingdom come.

Thy Will be done on earth as it is in Heaven.

The Gospel of the Lord.

The people answer:

Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ.

The leader will now say:

Jesus accepted the cross. Although difficult and heavy, he carried the cross in faith and love.

We were all surprised by this pandemic. All were busy living their lives. Then, everything stopped. This is our cross. We stay home as an act of faith and love.

We accept this cross because we care. We carry this cross because we realize that life is important.

The leader will now say:

We pray to the Lord, telling him that letting go of what we have been used to is not easy. Carrying the cross demands sacrifice. Help us to carry this cross with genuine love and deep faith. Amen.

THE SIXTH STATION: JESUS FALLS

We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you.

The people answer:

Because by your holy cross

you have redeemed the world.

The leader will now say:

A Reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah.

Yet it was our pain that he bore, our sufferings he endured. We thought of him as stricken, struck down by God and afflicted.

But he was pierced for our sins, crushed for our iniquity. He bore the punishment that makes us whole, by his wounds we were healed. We had all gone astray like sheep, all following our own way; But the Lord laid upon him the guilt of us all.

The Word of the Lord.

The people answer:

Thanks be to God.

The leader will now say:

Jesus gave in to exhaustion and fatigue, he fell to the ground. He had to gather the strength to stand up and continue the way.

Fighting an invisible enemy can be frustrating – it’s like falling in a bottomless pit. But we need to stay alert and focused. We need to keep standing from the fall. We need shepherds to lead us to march on.

The leader will now say:

We pray to the Lord, for our leaders in government and in the church. Grant them wisdom to discern the right path. Grant them determination to remain steadfast until the end. Amen.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke.

A large crowd of people followed Jesus, including many women who mourned and lamented him.

Jesus turned to them and said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep instead for yourselves and for your children, for indeed, the days are coming when people will say, “Blessed are the barren, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed.” At that time people will say to the mountains, ‘Fall upon us!’ and to the hills, ‘Cover us!’ for if these things are done when the wood is green what will happen when it is dry?”

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke.

Now one of the criminals hanging there reviled Jesus, saying, “Are you not the Messiah? Save yourself and us.” The other, however, rebuking him, said in reply, “Have you no fear of God, for you are subject to the same condemnation? And indeed, we have been condemned justly, for the sentence we received corresponds to our crimes, but this man has done nothing criminal.” Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” He replied to him, “Amen, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.”

His appearance was like lightning and his clothing was white as snow. Then the angel said to the women in reply, “Do not be afraid! I know that you are seeking Jesus the crucified. He is not here, for he has been raised just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay.”

Leader:

Let us now pray the Oratio Imperata for Protection against the Covid 19.

Merciful and compassionate Father,

we come to You in our need

to seek Your protection against the COViD 19 virus

that has disturbed and even claimed lives.

We ask You now to look upon us with love

and by Your healing hand,

dispel the fear of sickness and death,

restore our hope, and strengthen our faith,

We pray that You guide the people

tasked to find cures for this disease

and to stem its transmission.

We thank You for the vaccines developed

made possible by Your willing guiding hands.

Bless our efforts to use these vaccines

to end the pandemic in our country.

We pray for our health workers

that they may minister to the sick

with competence and compassion.

Grant them health in mind and body,

strength in their commitment,

protection from the disease.

We pray for those afflicted,

may they be restored to health.

Protect those who care for them.

Grant eternal rest to those who have died.

Give us the grace in these trying times

for work for the good of all

and to help those in need.

May our concern and compassion for each other

see us through this crisis

and lead us to conversion and holiness.

Grant all these

through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son,

Who lives and reigns with You

and the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

We fly to your protection, O Holy Mother of God.

Do not despise our petition in our necessities,

but deliver us always from all dangers,

O glorious and blessed Virgin. Amen.
