Excerpts from the homily of Rev. Fr. Joey Irlandez

On Light

“Jesus is our shining light. At the time of his resurrection, a light came out of the tomb. All those baptized are adopted children of God, so we are children of light and we should seek light.”

Candles

“Blessing during the Candelaria, the Candle Mass. Candles are part of our lives: at baptism, during wedding ceremonies, first communion, birthdays, funerals and scenes of accidents. Candles are blessed during processions. We do not wish to stay in darkness. We yearn for God’s light to guide us on the path of righteousness.”

Children

“As the first born male child, Jesus was brought to the temple forty days after birth, following the law of Moses. It serves as a reminder that all children are gifts from God, reminding parents that they do not own their children. God lent them their children. We magnify God when we bring children to the Church because He is the Fountain of Life.”

Theme of the Fiesta

“A mother, or parent, brings children to the church. At Lourdes, the Blessed Virgin asked Bernadette Soubirous to tell the Bishop to build a shrine. She also instructed Bernadette to dig into the mud to find a fountain with healing waters. At Lourdes, people drink from the spring. For others, they submerge in the waters and get healed. Being a mother, she wants her children to be healed. A real queen and a real mother has compassion for the poor and the sick because they are her children.”
